Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda's Primate Paradise
Where Gorillas Rule the Misty Mountains
In the far northwest of Rwanda, where the land rises into a chain of extinct volcanoes, lies Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans). This protected rainforest is part of the larger Virunga Massif, spanning Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. But Rwanda's section is the most famous and for good reason.
Volcanoes National Park is best known as the place where legendary primatologist Dian Fossey studied mountain gorillas for nearly two decades. Today, it remains one of the best places on Earth to track endangered mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.
Rwanda offers one of the most luxury-oriented gorilla trekking experiences in Africa. The permits are higher-priced than Uganda or DRC, but visitors get shorter drives, exceptionally well-trained guides, and a very exclusive experience.
In Rwanda, tracking gorillas feels less like an expedition and more like a privilege.
Each habituated gorilla family can only be visited by a small group of eight people for one hour. That hour – sitting silently among a mountain gorilla troop – is life-changing.
Not ready to stop after gorillas? Volcanoes National Park is also home to endangered golden monkeys, playful, energetic, and strikingly beautiful with their bright orange-gold fur. Tracking them is easier than gorilla trekking and makes a perfect addition to any itinerary.
For wildlife enthusiasts and history lovers, a hike to the Karisoke Research Center and Dian Fossey's grave is deeply moving. The hike passes through bamboo forests and offers stunning views of the volcanoes. Her grave remains a place of quiet reflection for visitors from around the world.
The park is named for its eight volcanoes. Adventurous travelers can climb:
- Mount Bisoke (3,711m) – famous for its stunning crater lake
- Mount Karisimbi (4,507m) – the highest of the Virunga volcanoes, requiring a 2-day trek
These climbs offer incredible views of Rwanda, Uganda, and DRC from the summit.
Before or after your trek, visit the Iby'Iwacu Cultural Village just outside the park. Former poachers and local community members now welcome visitors with traditional dancing, storytelling, and demonstrations of ancient crafts. It is a beautiful example of community-led conservation.
